My name is Toon Muylkens and I live in Flanders (dutch speaking part of Belgium). I was born on 22/10/1987.
I have a broad interest in everything that has to do with engineering, applied mathematics, electronics, science and software. I am a quick learner and I can think
outside of the box.
I studied engineering at the university of Leuven (Burgerlijk Ingenenieur). I have a bachelor in
electronical engineering
(major electronics at ESAT, minor computer science at
CW) and a master in mathematical engineering (Burgerlijk Ingenieur in de wiskundige ingenieurstechnieken).
I am looking for a challenging job as engineer. During my master I got especially interested in Computer Vision, Control Theory and System Identification.

Work experience:
- August 2009: I worked at LMS international. I did research about a certain system of equations. I formulated answers to the following
questions:
- What is the best way to solve the system? (eg: at the time I arrived they used normal least squares, but minimising the absolute error resulted a smaller
error. The absolute error minimiser was a lot less biased. This reduction in bias more then compensated the small increase in statistical error)
- Which equations to use? Is adding equations always better? (Some equations have a lower SNR than others)
- Should the system be balanced/rescaled? How to balance/rescale? When to balance/rescale?
- Is it possible to estimate some properties of the noise? (I used a technique based on singular value decomposition for this)
My research resulted in better estimates, while using less equations to solve the system. This means less (expensive) measurements have to be carried out.
My work was integrated in a PhD paper from which I am co-author.
- Summer of 2008: I worked for three months at Estudias. I designed a new software product (a webapplication used to query
big medical datasets). The application extracts semantic data out of regular data, tries to be very user friendly and present nice figures to the user.
Most of the time I worked on the backend (Java, SQL functions, postgreSQL functions in Java), but I also wrote an initial frontent in Adobe Flex.
Apart from the brainstorm and feedback sessions, I worked alone on this project. After 3 months I had a fully working proof of concept (data can be imported, semantic
data can be extracted and the user can perform queries by using a simple user interface). On Linked-in
I have a very nice recommendation from my mentor at Estudias.
- August 2007: I worked for one month at a BULO factory (making desks).
- August 2006: I worked for one month at a BULO factory (making desks).
- August 2005: I worked for one month at the Belgian Post (distributing mail).
- July 2005: I was trainer on a BLOSO-gymnastics happening for one week.
- Continuously from 2004: I am a trainer and a member of the board in 'gymflex' (gymnastics club: mens event).
Programming experience:
- In 1998 (I was 11 years old), I learned QBasic. I created a few games in QBasic (a quiz, a platform game, a snake-clone).
- In 1999 (I was 12 years old), I switched to Linux. Since then I experimented a lot with linux. Now I have a lot of experience with Linux.
- In 2000 (I was 13 years old), I started learning C++.
- In 2004 (I was 17 years old), I was finally good enough in C++ to make my first project in Qt: Edukator.
- In 2006, I started working on Qtrainer.
- When I was at the university I learned matlab, python, php, java, C, assembly and fortran. I had several programming courses and a database course.
